Initially established back in 1948 by Mel “Pa” and Dolores “Ma” Kurtz as a topsoil provider to farmers seeking better soil for their crops, today the Independence-based, regional, family-run Kurtz Bros., Inc. is a multi-faceted, forward-thinking, and environment-friendly leader in both innovative landscaping materials and trendsetting recycling services.

Built on a solid foundation of down-to-earth family values for Mel, Dolores, and their 7 children, an unbridled entrepreneurial spirit, and an ever-present, steadfast commitment to “(always) make (choices that make) the good earth better!” this unique business successfully transforms another’s cast-offs not only into breathtakingly-beautiful landscaping treasures for residential properties and sports fields but also into eco-friendly, high-tech solutions for Ohio communities and construction companies.

For any individual, organization, community, or corporation interested in improving, nurturing, or beautifying their natural surroundings – whether just outside their front door, encircling their brick and mortar business building, across their rooftop (!), or at their community’s playing field, Kurtz Brothers, Inc. is the first (and only) company to contact. The unique, affordable, and quality products, services, solutions, and ideas they offer individuals, businesses, and communities position them like the North Star above the desert sky, the lighthouse through a night’s storm, and the giant redwood in the forest. They are the company others look to for direction. They are trendsetting, yet tangible. They are a vast corporation, yet focused on the individual and his/her particular project. They are corporate professionals, yet family-owned and operated.

While there are various branches and offshoots to what they offer, there are two main seeds of business they have planted, nurture, and continue to grow across Ohio and neighboring regions – landscaping and recycling.

For the NE Ohio topography, the company offers soil for every landscaping goal and challenge imaginable. They have specific soils *for establishing lawns and landscape beds, *for general landscape construction projects, *for raised flower, shrub, and ornamental tree beds, *for Rain Gardens, *for growing greens on rooftops (!),*for promoting stronger, healthier plants, *for commercial potting needs, *for planting gardens and all types of flowers, shrubs and trees *for optimum drainage, and *for moisture retention. Whatever the goal, Kurtz Bros., Inc. has a nutrient-rich topsoil to make it blossom!

The mulch they offer is just as varied and specific as their topsoil. They have mulch that is from a 100% recycled product that doesn’t rot or attract insects but provides a deep, rich, long-lasting color to walkways, paths, and around shrubs and flowers. There’s mulch that is beautiful, finely-ground, long-lasting, weed-preventing, and colored-enhanced created from reclaimed wood. There’s natural mulch made from hardwood bark. There’s the popular, affordable, and soil-fortifying mulch ideal for backfill when tree planting or as a weed-free seed cover. And there’s even mulch they offer that is specifically designed for use on playgrounds or for walking paths! Committed to promote environmental sustainability with all their products – mulch included – Kurtz Bros., Inc. pioneered the process of recycling clean wood waste to produce the popular color-enhanced mulch.
