WHEN PIGS FLY
If you’re looking to adopt a dog or pet for your household and you live near Loudoun County, Virginia, you may want to consider the Loudoun County Animal Care and Control Center. The 13,000 square foot facility, located at 39820 Charles Town Pike in Waterford, was founded in 1967 b the Humane Society. It is operated solely by Loudoun County. The Center sits on 13 acres and has enough room for 90 cats and 45 dogs. They also have rabbits, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, and even reptiles!

The adoption process is quick and easy. Anyone 18 or older can adopt a pet. If it is a dog you are interested in bringing home but aren’t sure what breed or disposition of dog is right for you, they can help. Simply stop by and fill out a short survey; your answers will be matched with a dog that best suits your lifestyle and personality. The adoption fees are low and vary by the type of animal. All dogs and cats leave the facility spayed or neutered.

The Center also has numerous programs, including the Gray Whiskers Club ~ designed specifically for dogs and cats over the age of 7; by giving one of these animals a good home, you get a starter kit and a 50% discount on the adoption fee. If you’re a senior citizen looking for a furry companion, then their “Seniors for Seniors” program could be just what you’re looking for. This is for anyone over the age of 65 who adopts a pet 7 years and older.

If you can’t adopt a pet right now but still would like to help, the Center is always seeking volunteers. While they do not actively solicit donations from the public, a trust fund has been established for monetary donations. The facility does accept unopened bags or cans of pet food to help feed the animals.

The shelter is open Mon, Tues, Thursday, and Friday from 1-6PM; Wednesdays from 1-8PM; Saturdays 11AM-5PM. They’re closed Sundays. Don’t wait for pigs to fly, stop by today and see what pets they have for adoption or view the animals at www.co.loudoun.va.us/animals/shelter.htm or call (703) 777-0496 or email: animals@loudoun.gov
